🍯Santorini> Mykonos> Paros> TLV🌙
It truly was a magical 14 days away with my husband on our honeymoon. Ok away from everything but... one little malfunctioning pancreas. Because there are no vacays from t1d. In many ways, it’s like traveling with a cranky baby. T1d needs your attention, constantly. It cries, screams & has bg tantrums that test your emotional & physical stamina. Sometimes these episodes have an explanation & you regroup & regain control. Sometimes not. T1d wakes you up at night & loves to crawl into bed, especially when you want to sleep in. It requires A LOT of extra baggage & supplies (*fun fact: I actually carry a diaper bag when I travel, oh & fully stocked with snacks & juice boxes). T1d is also on your mind, like all of the time, even when you want to just relax. It’s there on the beach, when people are staring at your devices. It’s there exploring new city streets when you have to stop & treat a hypo. It’s there when you’re dancing & your pump site falls out, so you have to go back home & check for ketones. It’s there when you want to eat all of the local foods, but carb counting feels impossible. But, despite everything, you still have so much love, tenderness & patience for it.
Without t1d on this trip, I wouldn’t have met 3 incredible t1ds from 3 different countries. The instant bond is simply indescribable. Without t1d, I wouldn’t have been able to educate a t1d mother about the Dexcom, so that just maybe, she can have more piece of mind for herself & her daughter. Without t1d, I wouldn’t have found my newfound confidence, wearing my devices unapologetically. And without t1d, I would have eaten a lot more pita bread & gelato (that one I kinda wish I could still do). So, yes, it can be hard, frustrating & drain your energy at times (& I am so grateful for my husband who helps carry that load❤️). But t1d is also empowering & rewarding in its own funny way. And I guess I will always have that mama’s instinct over it- protect it, love it, & never fully let it go. Because wherever I go, it goes too- snacks, diaper bag & all.
