Hi, I'm Heather

I'll keep you updated on the latest in type 1 diabetes management... mostly through my own trials and errors :)

Why I don't eat cake when I'm hypo...

Why I don't eat cake when I'm hypo...

When you’re told there’s peanut butter & some “fruity powder” in your hair... (FYI it takes 3 consecutive hypos to look that fresh before 11am 😓)

Pro-tip: I absolutely abhor the taste & texture of glucose tablets, but during hectic days (basically the last couple weeks being back at work) I find that they’re the easiest, transportable, no-fuss solution for stubborn lows <50. For milder lows, I generally treat with either a small piece of fresh fruit or a couple of dates, as I much prefer anything natural over artificial. It’s not always easy & I definitely don’t always do it right, but I try not to look at lows as an excuse to #treatyoself, but rather a medical issue that simply needs to be treated immediately. Glucose tabs have a precise amount of carbs & a quick, predictable effect on my bgs, which helps avoid rebound highs. Also, they’re pretty unpalatable, so I won’t go HAM (like I would with ice cream). When I use hypos as an opportunity to indulge, I often end up on a rollercoaster of highs & lows. It’s just not worth it. I’d rather save my treats when I’m not a ravenous hypo maniac & can truly savor it. What’s your go-to hypo fix?
